Launching our Bere Island Community Archive

Bere Island Projects Group were one of a number of community groups who launched their community archive on the Irish Community Archive Network (iCAN) at a nationwide event in Laragh, Co Wicklow on May 31st.  The event in Wicklow also marked The Heritage Council’s support of the programme.

Bere Island Projects Group are one of four community groups in County Cork  who are part of the project along with Youghal Community Archives, Kilshannig Heritage Society and the Independence Museum Kilmurry.

John Walsh, Projects Officer with Bere Island Projects Group said the group were delighted to be part of iCAN. “It’s a way for us to digitise and share our island heritage collections to a wider audience, and we actively encourage people to share their photographs, and stories to the website, especially our island diaspora. We would like to express our thanks to Lorna Elms and Hassan Dabbagh at iCAN for all their support in getting our site online and Conor Nelligan the Heritage Officer at Cork County Council for bringing iCAN to County Cork.”
