Recording Our Bere Island Stories – John Joe O’Sullivan
Born on Bere Island in the townland of Ballinakilla and one of a family of eight. John Joe O’Sullivan emigrated to the USA in the 1950s and now lives in San Francisco with his wife and family. He and his family return to Bere Island annually.
John Joe talks to Eilis Duggan about his life growing up on Bere Island, and his recollections of the Irish Army destroying mines which were washed up on the island’s shores during World War Two, and the presence of British Minesweepers in the harbour.
The Bere Island Oral History project came about as a result of the Heritage Keepers Programme in partnership with the Burren Beo Trust and The Heritage Council.
